Corrosion and Rust Prevention: Keeping Metal Protected

Rust forms wherever two ingredients reach bare or poorly protected steel: moisture and oxygen. On a firearm, corrosion pits bores, seizes moving parts, lifts finishes, and lowers reliability over time. Because the chemistry is that simple, prevention is simple too — keep water and air away from the metal, and stay ahead of the small number of causes that let them in.

This guide explains how firearms corrode and how to stop it, from routine wipe-downs to controlled storage and the careful removal of light surface rust. It assumes the firearm is unloaded and cleared before any cleaning, oiling, or treatment begins.

What causes corrosion

Most corrosion problems trace back to four sources.

Moisture and humidity

Airborne moisture is the baseline threat. High humidity, rapid temperature changes, and poor ventilation cause water to form on metal surfaces. Condensation is especially awkward because it can form invisibly inside actions and bores — for example when a cold firearm is brought into a warm room.

Skin salts, sweat and fingerprints

Handling a firearm bare-handed leaves more than smudges. Skin oils, sweat, and fingerprints contain salts and acids that attack blued, parkerised, and bare steel. Salt is particularly aggressive because it draws and holds water against the metal, which is why carry against sweaty skin and coastal air are among the harder conditions for a firearm. A bare-handed fingerprint on an unprotected blued surface can begin to etch a fingerprint-shaped mark if it is left and stored without wiping.

Corrosive ammunition

Some ammunition, chiefly older military surplus, uses primers that leave corrosive salts behind when fired — potassium chloride or sodium chloride, the same family as table salt. These salts attract water from the air and drive rust in the bore, chamber, gas system, and bolt. Such rounds need a specific cleaning step, covered further down.

Improper storage

Two storage mistakes do most of the damage. The first is putting a dirty firearm away: carbon, copper, and powder fouling trap moisture and corrosive particles against the metal. The second is sealing the firearm against moisture-holding materials — foam-lined cases, soft sleeves, and poorly ventilated containers absorb and hold moisture right where you least want it.

The everyday defence: wipe down and leave a film

The routine protection is straightforward and follows naturally from ordinary cleaning:

  1. Handle clean and dry, then wipe down. Keep hands clean; after a handling session, wipe the exterior to remove fingerprints, skin oils, and sweat before the firearm is stored.
  2. Leave a light protective film. After cleaning, apply a thin, even coat of a quality gun oil or a CLP product. Metal should never be stored bare.

How a thin oil or CLP film protects

CLP stands for Cleaner, Lubricant, and Protectant. Its protective function is a thin boundary film: after cleaning and lubrication, the film inhibits oxidation, displaces moisture, and blocks exposure to air, salts, and corrosive contaminants. It keeps working even after the surface is wiped back to a sheen — a thin protective film remains on the metal.

Apply it thin, not thick. A heavy coat does not protect any better; it attracts dust and grit and can migrate into wood or onto cartridges. Aim for a light, even film over all exposed metal, especially the bore and any wear points. Keep oils and CLP off ammunition and out of primer pockets, as oil-contaminated primers can misfire. Finishes: helpful, but never a substitute

A firearm’s finish is its first line of defence, but no common finish is maintenance-free — all still benefit from cleaning, drying, and a light protective film.

  • Bluing (black oxide) adds a thin oxide layer that increases corrosion resistance, but is vulnerable to rust if neglected. It needs regular oiling and dry storage, and frequent inspection in humid conditions.
  • Parkerising (phosphate) is tougher than bluing, with greater resistance to corrosion, nicks, and scratches, and still benefits from a regular oil coat.
  • Metal plating such as hard chrome and nitrides adds corrosion resistance and is a very durable plate choice, with lower upkeep than bluing — though not zero.
  • Stainless steel uses chromium content (at least 10.5% by mass) for its anti-corrosive properties. It is low maintenance but still requires drying, cleaning, and oiling.
  • Cerakote (ceramic) provides a hard, durable finish resistant to wear, corrosion, chemicals, and impact. It is robust; clean and inspect as normal.

Treat a more corrosion-resistant finish as insurance, not as a replacement for the wipe-down. It lengthens the safety margin if a wipe-down is missed; it does not remove the need for one.

Controlled storage

Storage is where a firearm sits unattended longest, so it is where humidity control pays off most.

  • Lower the humidity inside the safe. Desiccant silica-gel units absorb moisture to keep the interior dry, work without electricity, and are reactivated by drying them out. Many indicating desiccants change colour as they saturate, signalling when to recharge them.
  • Powered options. Electric warming rods and small dehumidifiers are common alternatives; the goal is simply that the interior stays dry.
  • Monitor. A small hygrometer lets you confirm the interior is staying dry and helps you judge when to reposition or recharge desiccant.

Some indicating silica gel uses cobalt chloride (the classic blue-to-pink indicator), a flagged chemical; non-toxic orange-indicating gel is often preferred for home and safe use. Keep all desiccant packs away from children and pets.

Avoid storage that traps moisture. Sealed cases, zippered soft cases, and foam-lined boxes hold moisture against the metal like a damp sponge. For long-term storage, prefer an open rack or a ventilated safe with active humidity control, and never seal a firearm away wet or straight in from the cold before condensation has cleared and the metal has been wiped down.

Corrosive-primed surplus ammunition

Shooting corrosive ammunition is fine if you clean promptly and correctly. The hazard is the salt left in the bore and action, not the firing itself. As a working rule, treat Berdan-primed military surplus as potentially corrosive unless the packaging documents otherwise; Boxer primers are not corrosive.

The active cleaning step is water. Because the residue is water-soluble salt, you flush it out with hot water — that is what does the work. Water dissolves and carries the salts out of the bore, chamber, gas system, and bolt face. There is a common myth that an ammonia solution is needed to neutralise the salts; it is not. Plain hot water plus thorough drying is sufficient, and it comes down to the water taking the salts away.

Clean the same day you shoot corrosive ammunition, as the salts only need time and ambient moisture to start rusting steel. After the flush, water itself becomes a corrosion risk if left behind: dry the bore and all wetted parts completely — patches, compressed air, and gentle heat as appropriate — paying special attention to the gas system and any blind recesses where water can pool. Then run your normal solvent and lubricant routine and finish with a protective film.

Removing light surface rust

If light surface rust has already appeared, address it early and gently to avoid making it worse.

  • Catch it early. Light surface rust is far easier to mitigate than deep pitting; routine inspection is the cheapest rust removal there is.
  • Use bronze wool, not steel wool, on finished surfaces. Bronze wool does not rust and will not damage delicate blued finishes, and it does not shed particles that get trapped and later rust. It comes in fineness grades — start with the finest that works.
  • Technique. Apply a gun-safe lubricant or cleaner to the rust, let it sit a few minutes, gently rub the spots with bronze wool, then wipe the residue — which will show rust-coloured staining — with a clean rag.
  • Re-protect immediately. Once the rust is gone, wipe the area clean and re-apply a thin oil or CLP film so the freshly exposed metal does not flash-rust.

Know the limits. Deep pitting, rust under or through the finish, or corrosion inside the bore affecting accuracy is gunsmith territory. Aggressive abrasion — coarse steel wool, sandpaper, or power tools — can strip bluing and cause damage; if light bronze-wool work does not resolve it, stop and refer the firearm to a qualified gunsmith.
