If you have ever tried to fit an optic, a light or a bipod to a rifle and found the parts simply would not line up, you have run into the world of mounting standards. The good news is that once you understand how the pieces fit together, choosing the right accessory becomes straightforward. This guide walks through the four systems you are most likely to meet — Picatinny, M-LOK, KeyMod and ARCA-Swiss — and explains what does and does not work together.
Two layers of mounting
It helps to separate two different jobs that mounting hardware does.
- The accessory-attachment standard — the physical interface an optic, light or grip clamps onto. The dominant one is the Picatinny rail.
- The modular slot system on the handguard — a way to attach accessories, or short rail sections, directly to a slim handguard without wrapping heavy rail all the way around. These are KeyMod and M-LOK.
Modern rifles usually combine both: a continuous Picatinny rail on top for the optic, and M-LOK slots along the sides and underside of the handguard for everything else. Keeping these two layers straight is the key to avoiding most compatibility mistakes.
The Picatinny rail (MIL-STD-1913)
The Picatinny rail takes its name from the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, where the system originated. In the 1980s an engineer there set out to standardise the older Weaver system, and the resulting design received the MIL-STD-1913 designation. It was adopted by the U.S. military on 3 February 1995.
The detail that makes it work is precision. MIL-STD-1913 grooves are .206 inches wide with a centre-to-centre spacing of .394 inches. Those exact, repeatable slots are what allow an accessory to move from one rifle to another and still clamp securely.
Picatinny began life as a way to mount scopes, but its use expanded to tactical lights, laser aiming modules, night vision devices, reflex sights, foregrips, bipods and more. When the standard arrived in 1995, established service rifles were modified to include the Picatinny rail as standard equipment. Today it remains the universal interface for scope mounts and almost any accessory that needs a rock-solid, standardised fitting.
Picatinny versus Weaver
Weaver is Picatinny’s older, looser ancestor, and it is the source of a good deal of confusion at the bench. The two share the same general profile, but the dimensions differ. Picatinny slots are .206 inches wide; Weaver slots are .180 inches. Picatinny spacing is standardised at .394 inches centre-to-centre, whereas Weaver spacing was never consistently standardised.
That difference in slot width gives you the one rule worth memorising: because Picatinny slots are wider, a Weaver-compatible accessory will usually fit onto a MIL-STD-1913 rail, but the reverse is generally not true. A Picatinny mount will not lock properly on a Weaver rail because the Weaver slots are too narrow. Put simply — Weaver-on-Picatinny tends to work; Picatinny-on-Weaver tends not to. When in doubt, confirm the rail is a true 1913 spec before you buy.
Why the handguard systems exist
The first tactical handguards wrapped Picatinny rail on all four sides — the so-called quad rail. That gave you attachment points everywhere, but it was heavy and uncomfortable to hold, adding as much as twelve ounces of mass. The answer was negative-space mounting: instead of building rail up on the outside of the handguard, you cut slots into a slim handguard and fix hardware through them.
Because the mounting hardware goes into rather than onto the handguard, the result is a slimmer, lighter and more comfortable profile with attachment points only where you need them. Two competing negative-space standards emerged to do this job: KeyMod and M-LOK. You can browse both types across our rail systems.
KeyMod versus M-LOK
KeyMod
The KeyMod handguard was developed as a collaboration between VLTOR Weapon Systems and Noveske Rifleworks, who released the system to the public in 2012 in the hope of standardising universal attachment. It is an open-source design, meaning any company is free to use it, and its slots have a distinctive keyhole shape — a round hole leading into a slot.
M-LOK
M-LOK grew out of work Magpul Industries began in 2007 on its MOE system, which laid the groundwork for what followed. The Modular Lock — M-LOK — was patented by Magpul and introduced to the market in 2014. Part of the motivation was that Magpul’s polymer accessories did not work well with KeyMod’s conical nut, so M-LOK was designed to work better with non-metal mounting surfaces. Its slots are simple rounded rectangles, and the hardware uses a cammed T-nut that draws the accessory tight.
Why M-LOK became dominant
This was not settled by marketing but by testing. In 2016 U.S. Special Operations Command put M-LOK and KeyMod head to head, and a 2017 report from the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division reported the results. While the two were comparable in endurance and rough handling, M-LOK greatly outperformed KeyMod in repeatability, drop testing and failure-load testing.
The headline figure came from failure-load testing — pulling accessories off the rail — where Crane noted a 215% increase in average sustained load for M-LOK over KeyMod. NSWC Crane recommended the M-LOK system over any other, and it was incorporated into new acquisitions. The outcome is the market you see today: M-LOK is the dominant modern standard, our M-LOK rail systems reflecting that, though KeyMod hardware still turns up in the field.
ARCA-Swiss for precision shooting
A different approach comes from the precision and photography world. ARCA-Swiss rails are characterised by a rectangular, dovetail design that allows a sliding action, so a clamp can be positioned anywhere along the rail rather than only at fixed slots. Unlike Picatinny, ARCA allows far more fore-and-aft adjustment, and it uses a clamp mechanism for quick, tool-free attachment or removal.
Its strengths are continuous fore-and-aft positioning — ideal for sliding a bipod or a tripod clamp to exactly the right spot — and an ultra-stable interface for prone, barricade and tripod shooting. The trade-off is that it is a specialist interface, rare on traditional carbines or duty rifles but increasingly built into handguards aimed at precision and competition use.
How to choose, and what is compatible
A quick way to think about which system does which job:
- Picatinny (1913): the universal accessory rail. The go-to for optics and anything needing a standard, dependable interface.
- M-LOK: negative-space handguard slots. The default modern choice — light, strong and supported by a huge ecosystem of accessories.
- KeyMod: also negative-space handguard slots. A legacy alternative that has faded since the SOCOM result.
- ARCA-Swiss: a sliding dovetail clamp for precision and long-range work, tripods and bipods.
The compatibility points worth keeping in mind before you order:
- M-LOK and KeyMod accessories are not interchangeable. A KeyMod accessory will not mount in an M-LOK slot, and vice versa. Always match the accessory to the slot type on your handguard.
- Both M-LOK and KeyMod handguards accept short Picatinny rail sections that bolt into their slots, so you can still add a Picatinny fitting wherever you need one.
- Confirm a rail is a true MIL-STD-1913 before assuming a Picatinny mount will lock into it.
