A light or a laser on a firearm is a tool with a very specific job, and choosing one sensibly means understanding what the numbers on the box actually describe. This guide walks through what lumens and candela measure, how visible and infrared lasers differ, how these devices are switched on and mounted, and the safety principle that should shape how you use any of them. It explains the specifications in plain terms so you can match a device to a real setting rather than to a marketing figure.
What a weapon light is for
A weapon-mounted light is a torch used alongside a firearm to aid low-light target identification, letting a person illuminate and aim at the same time while keeping a normal two-handed grip. Its value rests on safety rather than convenience. Before acting on anything in the dark, you have to solve two problems in order: confirming what and who is in front of you, and then seeing well enough to line up your sights. A light lets you identify first and aim second. It is an identification tool as much as an aiming aid, and it never makes the decision for you.
Lumens and candela: two different numbers
Two figures dominate the specification sheets, and they measure different things. Lumens describe the total amount of light a device emits — more lumens give a brighter, wider wall of illumination up close. Candela describe the intensity of the brightest point in the beam, which sits at the centre and falls off towards the edges. Higher candela means more throw: the beam reaches and identifies subjects farther away.
The distinction matters because the two numbers answer different questions. As SureFire’s own product education explains, long-range identification depends on candela, while total output is a matter of lumens. A common way to frame it for duty use is that lumens are how much light you have and candela is how hard the hotspot throws — and the right balance depends on where you actually intend to use the device.
Flood versus throw
Every beam has a bright central hotspot and a dimmer surrounding spill, sometimes called flood. That wider spill is a low-intensity, wide-angle area that helps you find where to point the concentrated part of the beam, and it improves situational awareness. A close-quarters indoor light favours flood — more lumens and even spill for rooms and near work. A light meant to identify across a yard or a field favours throw — high candela to reach the distance, at the cost of a narrower illuminated area. Very high output is not automatically an advantage. Bright lights produce glare and can reflect off nearby walls, smoke, or glass back into your own eyes. Match the output to the environment; brighter is not always better indoors.
Positive target identification
The first job of a weapon light is positive identification — confirming what and who is in front of the muzzle before any decision is made. The advantage of a weapon-mounted unit here is that it lets you identify while keeping a firm grip on the firearm. This is inseparable from the basic rule of being sure of your target and what lies beyond it: you cannot be sure in darkness without putting light on the subject. Identification is a deliberate step, not a reflex, and it is no substitute for qualified, hands-on training.
Activation: momentary and constant-on
How you switch a light on has tactical consequences. There are two fundamental modes, often combined in a single switch. Momentary keeps the light on only while you press and hold, going dark the moment you release — useful for brief looks that leave you harder to locate. Constant-on stays lit until you switch it off, for sustained illumination once you have committed to lighting an area.
Switch hardware varies. Push-button tailcaps are frequently constant-on only. Pressure switches and pads generally offer both, with a light press for momentary and a firmer press to lock to constant-on. Combination switches integrate both functions in one control. The choice between modes is situational and yours to make in the moment. Many instructors favour brief, intermittent momentary use during a search so the light’s position does not continuously mark you — and whichever mode you use, treat every press as also indexing the muzzle.
Mounting lights and lasers
Modern lights and lasers attach through standardised rail systems, so an appropriately sized, rail-compatible unit can be fitted to most hosts rather than being tied to one firearm design. Two points are specific to these devices. First, position for the switch: a light is only useful if you can reach its control from a firing grip, so choose the mounting spot for activation ergonomics, not just for the rail space that happens to be free. Second, lasers must be zeroed. Because a laser sits offset from the bore, it has to be zeroed much like a conventional sight so the beam meets the point of impact at a chosen distance. A laser knocked loose or shifted on the rail no longer indicates where the firearm is pointed — it changes nothing about where rounds go, only about where the laser says they go. Confirm mount security and re-check the zero after any remount.
Laser aiming devices
A laser sight projects a beam onto the target to give a visual reference point, rather than asking you to look through the device. Visible lasers come in red and green. In bright daylight the eye picks up green more readily, because green wavelengths activate more of the eye’s cone receptors; in reduced light the eye registers both colours almost equally well. Red units are simpler, lighter and generally the more economical option, while green units are more complex to produce and so tend to be larger and dearer.
Infrared (IR) lasers are invisible to the unaided eye and are used together with a night vision device, under which the otherwise-invisible beam and dot become visible to the operator. IR is helpful precisely because a head-mounted night vision device makes aiming through iron sights or a conventional optic awkward. Two IR functions are often combined in one unit: a narrow aiming laser and a diffuse illuminator that floods an area much like an IR torch. Without a compatible device, an IR laser shows the user nothing.
A laser is an aid, not a replacement for sights. It can speed target acquisition and help from awkward stances, and training with one can sharpen skills — but it washes out in bright light, the straight beam does not account for bullet drop at distance, and an active beam can reveal your position. Many instructors and manufacturers recommend continuing to train without a laser to avoid becoming dependent on it. Treat it as one tool among several.
The core safety principle
A handheld light and a weapon light are not interchangeable, because of where the muzzle goes. A weapon-mounted light is always aimed parallel to the bore, so illuminating an object means the firearm is also pointed at it. Searching with a weapon light therefore points the muzzle at everything you light up — including family members, bystanders, pets, and yourself in a mirror. That directly conflicts with the rule never to let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
A handheld light avoids this because it is independent of the firearm: it lets you illuminate an area that may or may not hold a subject without pointing the muzzle there. This is why many trained users carry both. Use a handheld light to search and identify, and bring the weapon light to bear only on a subject you have already decided to engage. The hands-free advantage of a weapon light is real, but it does not override muzzle discipline.
A note on regulation
Lasers and IR devices are among the more heavily regulated firearm accessories, and laser-class limits, IR capability, buyer eligibility and use-specific rules such as those for hunting vary widely by jurisdiction and change over time.
